President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged young people to preserve and promote the legacy of the Mutapa Empire, describing it as the foundation of Zimbabwe’s identity and aspirations.
Speaking at Muzvondiwa Business Centre in Zvishavane, where he was Guest of Honour at the 2025 Munhumutapa Day commemorations coinciding with his 83rd birthday, the President said the values of Mutapa should inspire today’s generation to embrace patriotism, hard work, and loyalty to the nation.
“Mutapa represents more than just a historical figure. He embodies the values of nation-building, leadership and sovereignty,” President Mnangagwa said.

He highlighted that the Mutapa Empire, once one of the most powerful and prosperous kingdoms in southern Africa, was built on trade in precious minerals, long-distance commerce, stable governance, and respect for religion, culture, and spirituality.
“The empire remains a beacon of inspiration for our youth to remain resolute in the preservation of our rich legacy as a people. It should remain a source of motivation as we look into the future towards Vision 2030,” he said.
The President also commended this year’s commemorations, themed around youth empowerment, saying they reflected the importance of revolutionary roots and the role of young people in shaping the country’s future.
“True patriotism means putting our country first, protecting our culture and defending the sovereignty that was won through the blood and sacrifice of liberation heroes,” he said. “It is about taking pride in being Zimbabwean, working hard in your chosen fields and rejecting tendencies that weaken our unity.”
He called on youth to demonstrate discipline, honesty, and commitment to national development while upholding Zimbabwe’s dignity at home and abroad.
“Our heritage calls upon you, our youth, to be bearers of national pride, to uphold the dignity of Zimbabwe wherever you go, and to ensure that our flag flies high with honor and respect,” he said.
The Munhumutapa Day commemorations were attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and community members, with festivities marking both the cultural heritage of the Mutapa Empire and President Mnangagwa’s birthday.
