President Emmerson Mnangagwa has thrown his weight behind Zimbabwe’s national rugby team, the Sables, by pledging financial support and rallying the nation behind their international campaign.
In a show of solidarity and national pride, President Mnangagwa hosted the Sables at State House on Wednesday, where he presented a US$100,000 donation to aid the team’s preparations and participation in the upcoming tournament.
Addressing the players and officials, the President praised the team’s dedication and resilience, describing them as national ambassadors and symbols of unity. He urged the Sables to remain focused and committed, assuring them of the government’s full support.
“Go out there and raise the Zimbabwean flag high. The nation is behind you,” he said.
The gesture has been widely welcomed by the rugby community and sports enthusiasts across the country, who see it as a timely boost to the team’s morale and logistical needs.
The Sables are currently preparing for a crucial phase in their international fixtures, with hopes of qualifying for major global competitions.
Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) officials expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it would go a long way in meeting the team’s travel, training, and welfare requirements.
