War veterans who have lived at their homesteads for more than two decades in the Clipsham area of Masvingo have expressed concern and frustration over looming eviction notices, saying the situation threatens their livelihoods and long-established homes.
Several of the affected residents told reporters that they settled in the area shortly after independence-related resettlement processes and have since built permanent structures, raised families, and relied on the land for farming and grazing.
“We have lived here for years. Our children were born here, and our lives are rooted in this place,” said one resident, who asked not to be named. “We are struggling to understand why we are now being told to leave.”
The residents questioned whether land is now reserved for the elite few who are benefitting.
Community members said they have not been given clear explanations regarding the reasons for the evictions or information on possible relocation plans. They are appealing to relevant authorities to engage them through dialogue and consider their long-standing occupation of the land.
Local leaders confirmed awareness of the issue and said consultations were ongoing, although no final resolutions had been communicated at the time of reporting.
