Residents in Zvishavane have raised a concern over the operation of shebeens in some of the mining town’s residential suburbs during the lockdown period.
Residents who spoke to Great Dyke News 24 said that alcohol is sold at the illegal spots late into the night and patrons disregard covid-19 regulations putting the lives of other residents at risk.
“They are certain individuals that are selling alcohol during the national lockdown curfew hours. This creates higher chances of spreading the Covid-19 infectious disease because when one is drunk they are less likely to wear a mask or sanitise. The regulations are less likely to be followed,” said one of the residents.
Reached for comment, Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands Provincial Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said that residents should report such operations to the nearest police station to ensure the culprits are brought to book.
