The Gweru City Council has issued a stern warning to informal traders operating from undesignated areas, announcing plans to demolish their stalls if they fail to regularize their businesses. This move is part of the council’s efforts to bring order to the city’s trading activities and ensure compliance with municipal regulations.
Gweru City Council spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee highlighted that the ongoing proliferation of illegal trading points across the city has become a growing concern, leading to congestion, littering, and potential health hazards. She stressed that the council is taking decisive action to address the situation, with plans to clear out all unauthorized vending sites.
Chingwaramusee added that the council has already identified several designated sites within the city that can accommodate the informal traders.
She urged those affected to engage with council offices as soon as possible to secure spaces, warning that failure to do so would result in the demolition of their current stalls.
This crackdown is part of a broader effort by Gweru City Council to improve the city’s aesthetics and maintain public health standards. Chingwaramusee noted that the designated market areas are equipped with basic amenities and facilities, which will provide traders with a more conducive environment to conduct their businesses.
