Government has revealed that the Tugwi -Mukosi irrigation project plan is set to be completed by November 30, GreatDykeNews24 reports.
Speaking to GreatDykeNews24, Minister of Lands ,Agriculture Water and Rural Resettlement Dr Anxious Jongwe Masuka revealed that today he led a delegation of nine ministers to ensure that they actualise the master plan and the 40 000 hectare proposed irrigation.
“The meeting was very successful, we looked at the proposed 15 megawatt power plant.
“We looked at the beneficiaries in the community, we looked at the recreational part and very excitingly, we also looked at the whole Masvingo province irrigation potential.
“So overally, the master plan and the irrigation completion plan will be done by November 30 and we think that realistically we will be able to get a lot of benefit from this project which is very over due, ” he said.
Tugwi-Mukosi Dam is billed as a catalyst of socio-economic development owing to its vast irrigation potential.
The dam was commissioned in 2017 amid high expectations it was going to spur irrigation development in the south of the country, particularly sugar cane production and winter maize but the master plan for the project has not been finalised.
Besides irrigating more than 25 000 hectares in arid parts of southern Masvingo, the dam is also a potential fisheries hub that can boost the nutrition of surrounding communities
Tugwi-Mukosi is Zimbabwe’s largest inland dam with a capacity of 1,8 billion cubic meters.
