Villagers in the Great Dyke area have been urged to use standard building methods and durable materials to protect their homes from extreme weather conditions.

The call follows the destruction of six households by heavy rains and strong winds in villages under Chief Wedza in Zvishavane District over the weekend.

Speaking to Great Dyke News after visiting the affected families, Zvishavane District Development Coordinator, Mr. Darlington Chokera, said many of the damaged homes were vulnerable due to poor construction methods and weak materials. He stressed the importance of adhering to approved building standards to reduce losses during adverse weather.

Mr. Chokera said the affected families are in urgent need of assistance, including temporary accommodation, blankets, food, farming inputs and schoolbooks, which were destroyed by the severe weather.

Authorities have urged communities in the district to take weather warnings seriously and to adopt safer construction practices as the rainy season continues.
