The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) confirmed a tragic loss at Lake Chivero, where cyanobacteria contamination led to the deaths of four endangered rhinos, alongside other species including zebras, wildebeests, fish eagles, goats, and cattle.
In a statement Zimparks said despite mitigation efforts, such as placing salt blocks and artificial water points, the contamination spread rapidly, underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated approach from government bodies, local communities, and environmental stakeholders to address pollution challenges at Lake Chivero.
It said this incident highlights the critical importance of strengthening conservation efforts ahead of the Ramsar CoP15 in July 2025.
