Zanu PF Chief Whip and Gutu South legislator Pupurai Togarepi has emphasized the importance of tax justice and corporate social responsibility, stating that the government must ensure those exploiting Zimbabwe’s resources contribute fairly to the nation’s development.
Addressing the ongoing issues of resource exploitation, Togarepi argued that failing to tax such entities would be a disservice to the people of Zimbabwe.
“If we don’t tax those who are exploiting our resources, we would not have done justice for our people,” he said. “All governments around the world appropriately tax businesses, considering the environment and circumstances. The culture of paying taxes must be instilled in our people.”
Togarepi highlighted the expectation of Zimbabwean citizens for the government to deliver services, which includes the equitable taxation of corporations.
“Our friends from other countries, when they travel to their motherland, feel a sense of responsibility to pay taxes. But in Zimbabwe, when we try to enforce taxes on individuals or entities, it’s often seen as mere politicking among ourselves,” he noted.
