The Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (Zimcodd) say women in the mining sector continue to experience various forms of abuse from their male counterparts.
Speaking to Great Dyke News 24 ’s Paul Sibanda, ZIMCODD board member Siduduzile Masilela said in parts of Matabeleland South there have been reports of gold robberies and death threats.
She also appealed to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to come up with measures that will protect women in the sector.
“The main challenge is crime is increasing, women are mostly in fear, people are fighting everyday. Sometimes at the mines while working, the violent ones appear and take your produce by force and even beat some people. I think the government should reinforce security in the minning sector,” she said.
In next month Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day on the 8th of March under the theme “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.”
