The Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) has expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to pay the Zimbabwean dollar (ZIG) component of teachers’ November 2024 salaries and bonuses.

In a statement issued on November 26, ZIMTA described the omission as a serious breach of contractual obligations, which has left educators facing severe financial difficulties during a critical time of the year.

The association noted that the unpaid ZIG component, a key part of the agreed remuneration package, has eroded trust between teachers and their employer. Many educators are now struggling to meet their financial obligations, with the situation exacerbated by the economic pressures associated with the end-of-year period.

Beyond financial hardship, ZIMTA warned that the omission has been perceived as a devaluation of teachers’ efforts and contributions to society. This has reportedly caused a significant blow to morale, leaving many educators feeling undervalued and demoralized.

The lack of communication or explanation regarding the omission has further compounded frustrations, sparking fears of a return to the economic instability experienced during the 2008 crisis.

ZIMTA is calling for the urgent disbursement of the ZIG component, along with a formal explanation and assurances that such lapses will not recur.
