Mbizo Constituency legislator, Corban Madzivanyika, has urged the Ministry of Finance to redirect unused government funds towards the refurbishment of the Hwange Power Plant, in a bid to tackle Zimbabwe’s long-standing electricity shortages.
Speaking during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Madzivanyika highlighted the crippling effects of power outages on the country’s economy, particularly on industries and households. He emphasized that unused funds sitting idle in various government ministries could be channeled into critical energy projects to provide a sustainable solution.
“Zimbabwe’s electricity crisis has persisted for far too long, disrupting livelihoods and stifling economic growth. It is imperative that we prioritize refurbishing the Hwange Power Plant to enhance generation capacity,” said Hon. Madzivanyika.
The Hwange Power Plant, once Zimbabwe’s largest energy source, has been plagued by aging infrastructure and operational inefficiencies, significantly contributing to the country’s power deficits. Efforts to rehabilitate the plant have faced delays, with limited financial resources cited as a major obstacle.
Madzivanyika called on the Ministry of Finance to take decisive action by reallocating unused budgetary allocations from underperforming ministries to the Energy Ministry. He noted that such a move would demonstrate a commitment to resolving a crisis that continues to weigh heavily on the nation.
The MP’s proposal comes amid growing public outcry over load shedding, which has disrupted businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities across the country.
Madzivanyika also appealed for greater transparency and accountability in the use of funds for energy projects, emphasizing that restoring public trust is essential for the success of such initiatives.
