Zimbabwe’s power generation capacity reached a total of 897MW over the weekend, according to the latest figures from the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC). Despite this output, the nation continues to experience significant load shedding, driven by a major technical fault at Unit 8 of the Hwange Thermal Power Station.
The ZPC report showed that Hwange Power Station contributed the bulk of the electricity supply, generating 635MW. Meanwhile, Kariba Power Station added 215MW, and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) supplied an additional 47MW to the national grid.
However, this combined generation capacity remains insufficient to meet the country’s electricity demands, leading to ongoing power outages. ZESA Holdings, responsible for the distribution of electricity, in Saturday announced increased load shedding schedules as a direct consequence of the reduced output from Hwange.
ZESA has assured the public that their technical teams are working around the clock to resolve the issues at Hwange and restore full operational capacity.
The power crisis has caused disruptions across both residential and industrial sectors, with many businesses and households struggling to cope with the unpredictable electricity supply.
