A political analyst is emphasizing the imperative of an open and candid dialogue between the governments of Zimbabwe and the United States to address outstanding issues and propel Zimbabwe forward. The analyst, Tendai Rueben Mbofana, suggests that these dialogues should be conducted discreetly to prevent any attempts to play to the public gallery.
In an interview with Tichaona Mutsapati of Great Dyke News, Mbofana pointed out that while the recent sanctions may not signal a significant change, having been in place for 23 years since 2001, their impact has intensified. He highlighted that even with President ED Mnangagwa’s re-engagement efforts, some of the sanctions were lifted, but there was little tangible change, with the situation persisting for over two decades.
Mbofana underscored the need for a pragmatic approach, emphasizing that the government is unlikely to alter its course after such an extended period of sanctions. Instead, he urged for confidential dialogues between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of normalizing relations to pave the way for Zimbabwe’s economic development and recovery.
Earlier legislator Energy Mutodi called on parliament to engage the US Congress on the sanctions issue.
