Mimosa Implements Staff Rationalization Measures Amid Depressed Metal Prices

Platinum mining company, Mimosa, has undertaken a staff rationalization exercise in response to the prevailing low metal prices that have persisted since April 2023.

In a media update the company reported a continuous decline in metal prices, experiencing a significant decrease of up to 35% during this period, adversely impacting cash flow and overall profitability. Mimosa foresees a prolonged period of depressed metal prices and, in light of this, has implemented a series of strategic measures to sustain its business.

Among these measures, Mimosa said it has curtailed capital expenditure, implemented cost reduction initiatives, and introduced cash conservation strategies.

Additionally, the company said it has conducted a review of its staffing structures to optimize efficiency in the current market environment. This evaluation has led to a staff rationalization exercise, affecting thirty-three managerial and supervisory positions.

Mimosa said it offered a voluntary separation package to twenty-four employees, while nine others opted for early retirement. The company clarified that, at this stage, no further rationalization of the permanent staff complement is planned.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Mimosa underscored the significance of its workforce, considering people as the most crucial asset in its business operations. The company highlighted that it engaged employees throughout the implementation of various measures, aiming to maintain high morale and achieve production targets.

It is worth noting that Mimosa had previously announced the postponement of expansion plans at North Hill in response to the prolonged period of depressed metal prices late last year.
