Marondera Central legislator Caston Matewu has called out suppliers for using fluctuating exchange rates as a justification for their failure to deliver vehicles contracted by government entities.

Speaking recently, Matewu demanded enhanced accountability and adherence to contract terms from both suppliers and government officials.

He expressed frustration over repeated excuses related to exchange rate volatility, arguing that these claims undermine the reliability of contractual agreements.

“The use of exchange rate fluctuations as a pretext for non-delivery is unacceptable,” Matewu stated. “Suppliers must honor their commitments and deliver the goods as per the agreed timelines. The constant shifting of blame to external factors like exchange rate changes is not only misleading but also a disservice to the public.”

Matewu’s remarks come in the wake of revelations in the 2023 Auditor General`s report that government departments and agencies did not receive cars and other consumable from companies that were paid in full to deliver to them.

He emphasized the need for strict enforcement of contract terms and proposed stricter penalties for non-compliance to ensure that suppliers meet their obligations.

The MP also urged government entities to vet suppliers more rigorously and to establish clearer guidelines and contingency plans to mitigate the impact of economic fluctuations.
