Russia’s Chess Team Remains Banned from International Competitions.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has upheld its ban on Russia and Belarus from international chess competitions following a general assembly meeting in Budapest. This decision comes in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which led to both nations’ expulsion from the federation.

Supporters of the ban argue that chess in Russia is closely tied to the Kremlin, with officials like spokesman Dmitry Peskov holding positions on the domestic chess governing board. While a majority of delegates voted to explore potential exemptions for children and vulnerable groups in consultation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the bans against the Russian national team, officials, flag, and anthem will remain in effect.

The final authority on this matter lies with the FIDE Council, which is expected to uphold the assembly’s decision. Malcolm Pein, head of the English Chess Federation, described the outcome as a “crushing defeat” for Russia, emphasizing the delegates’ concerns over maintaining a harmonious relationship with the IOC.
