In a heartfelt ceremony at the Zimplats Selous Plant yesterday, Wilson Dube, a veteran cyclist with an illustrious 57-year career, was appointed the ambassador of the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke. This prestigious cycling event, launched annually to promote wellness and celebrate the rich economic and cultural heritage of Zimbabwe’s Great Dyke, honoured Dube’s decades-long dedication to the sport.

Dube, who began his cycling journey in 1967 with Shabani Mine in Hwange, expressed deep gratitude to the event organizers and all stakeholders for recognizing his contributions. “These efforts will go a long way in motivating other cyclists to continue pushing forward,” he said, visibly moved as he accepted the role. Dube also received a 2000-kilovolt solar energy system from Chloride Zimbabwe, presented by Exide, which he said would greatly improve his quality of life in retirement.

Tearing up as he accepted the gift, Dube said, “This support not only secures my comfort as I step back from the sport, but it’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together.” The 2000kv solar system significantly contributes to his home, easing his transition into retirement and serving as a symbol of appreciation from the cycling community.

The ambassadorial title and solar gift arrive at a poignant time in Dube’s life. Last year, a freak incident forced him to retire after falling off his bicycle near Siboza, close to Zvishavane. Nevertheless, his influence resonates among younger cyclists, whom he has tirelessly mentored and inspired over the years.

As the 2024 Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke unfolds, cyclists are currently en route along the Unki lap, having rested in Kwekwe overnight. Today, they will pass through Gweru and head toward Shurugwi, where they will rest once more at Unki, before continuing along the Great Dyke. Spanning from Matabeleland South to Mashonaland East, this mineral-rich belt represents both Zimbabwe’s natural heritage and its potential for unity and prosperity.

The organizers of the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke said Dube’s legacy embodies the essence of the event, which goes beyond promoting physical fitness to emphasize the economic and cultural importance of the Great Dyke. With his appointment as an ambassador, they hope to encourage more young Zimbabweans to take up cycling, inspired by Dube’s lifelong dedication and achievements in the sport.
