The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating two separate road accidents that occurred on January 14, 2025, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
In the first incident, a 42-year-old man, Charles Sikarova of Nkayi, was driving a red Howo Sino truck along the Gweru-Zvishavane Road when he attempted to overtake a Nissan Vanette around the 43km peg at approximately 4:40 PM. Sikarova reportedly lost control of the truck, which veered off the road and struck two pedestrians. One pedestrian succumbed to injuries upon admission to Shurugwi District Hospital, while the other sustained injuries.
Three passengers in the truck were also injured during the incident and are receiving medical attention.
In a separate accident along the Mberengwa-West Nicholson Road earlier that day, a 6-year-old boy was critically injured after being hit by a Toyota Probox. The vehicle, driven by Trust Shumba (23) of Makwasha, Zvishavane, was traveling toward West Nicholson with six passengers onboard when the child was struck while crossing the road. The boy sustained a cut on his forehead and a fractured left leg and is currently in serious condition at United Bulawayo Hospitals.
The ZRP has appealed to motorists to avoid speeding and exercise caution on the roads to prevent further tragedies. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
