BINDURA, Zimbabwe ā€” At least seven artisanal miners were killed when a mine shaft collapsed at Botha Mine in Bindura, Zimbabwe, on January 18, 2025, authorities said. Five of the victims have been identified, while efforts continue to confirm the identities of the remaining two.

According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the deceased miners were operating in an illegal mining site when the collapse occurred. Those identified include Leo Chapondama, Zolani Nyani (21), Samson Madyira (20), Jacob Madyira Nongwe (34), and Mathew Madyira (23). All were from villages in the Bindura area.

The police have issued a strong warning against mining in illegal and disused shafts, citing the increased danger of collapses due to persistent heavy rains that have weakened the ground.

Artisanal mining, which is largely informal, has grown significantly in Zimbabwe as economic hardships push many into the hazardous but lucrative trade. The sector is known for frequent accidents, with inadequate safety measures and poor mining conditions leading to fatalities.

Authorities have struggled to regulate the booming artisanal mining industry, which plays a crucial role in Zimbabweā€™s gold production but also poses serious environmental and safety risks. Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for better oversight and safety protections for miners.
