The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Midlands Province has issued a strong warning to members of the public to be cautious of the dangers posed by heavy rains, flooding, and lightning.
Speaking to Great Dyke News ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the province has recorded at least 10 sudden deaths due to drowning and lightning strikes in January alone, with several others hospitalized.
He said the rainy season, which runs from November to April, has resulted in increased water levels in rivers, posing serious risks, especially to those attempting to cross flooded areas or engaging in outdoor activities during downpours.
He highlighted some of the tragic incidents reported:
• Two juveniles drowned while swimming in Zvishavane, while an adult was swept away trying to cross a flooded river.
• Two more people lost their lives after slipping and falling into a well in Silobela and a river in Mberengwa.
• A young girl was attacked by a crocodile in a flooded Kwekwe river.
• Two people were struck by lightning while working in their fields.
To prevent further loss of life, authorities are urging the public to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rains, never attempt to cross flooded rivers, and ensure children are not left unsupervised near water bodies.
Motorists are also warned against driving across submerged bridges, as they risk being swept away.
