People with disabilities in Zimbabwe have called for the allocation of land to enable them to carry out income-generating projects that would support their quest for financial and economic independence.

In separate interviews they expressed a strong desire to break free from the cycle of poverty and create sustainable livelihoods for themselves.

The plea comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over the challenges faced by people with disabilities in Zimbabwe, particularly regarding access to basic services, employment, health, and education. Around 11% of adults over the age of 15 in the country have some form of functional difficulty, with a slightly higher prevalence among women and the elderly. Common disabilities include visual and mobility issues, which are more prevalent in rural areas.

The poverty levels among people with disabilities are stark. According to statistics, 71% of those with significant functional difficulties live in multidimensional poverty, compared to 47% of the general population without disabilities. These individuals often face discrimination and barriers when accessing essential services and employment opportunities, further exacerbating their struggles.
