The first High Court session in Midlands Province for 2025 concluded on February 7, delivering tough sentences to convicted criminals. With three judges presiding over the Gweru Circuit Court and two judges at the Gokwe Circuit Court, a total of 144 cases were finalized.
According to Assistant Commissioner Helena Mahonde, most convictions were for murder and culpable homicide, with sentences ranging from 14 to 40 years. Three individuals received life imprisonment, while another was sentenced to 40 years behind bars.
Law enforcement officials hailed the verdicts as a strong deterrent against violent crime.
“As the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), we are pleased with these sentences because they send a clear message to would-be offenders,” said Mahonde. She also commended the judiciary and the public for their cooperation in investigations and court proceedings.
