South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed a legal challenge against the Expropriation Act, which allows land seizure without compensation in certain cases. The law has sparked a diplomatic row, with US President Donald Trump freezing aid, accusing the government of rights violations.
The ANC-led coalition government denies land is being taken without due process, calling Trump’s actions “misinformation.” The DA, South Africa’s second-largest party, argues the law is unconstitutional and echoes apartheid-era land dispossessions.
Meanwhile, the White House has announced plans to prioritize resettlement for South African farmers, mainly white Afrikaners, as refugees.
President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to send envoys abroad to clarify the policy shift.
