China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening environmental, social and governance (ESG) cooperation with Zimbabwe, highlighting sustainable mining, green energy and community development as key areas of focus.

Speaking at the ESG Breakfast Interface 2025 in Harare, Minister Counsellor Tang of the Chinese Embassy said mineral resources must be harnessed to drive economic growth, improve health and well-being, and protect the environment.

“ESG goes beyond corporate responsibility. It is intrinsically tied to a country’s sustainable development and the welfare of its people,” he said. Tang cited President Xi Jinping’s principle that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” noting China’s success in cleaning its skies, rivers and landscapes through ecological restoration and green energy investment.

He emphasized that Chinese companies operating in Zimbabwe are required to strictly comply with local laws, respect Zimbabwean culture and uphold corporate social responsibility. Many, he added, are already investing in solar energy, land rehabilitation and local community projects.

“China and Zimbabwe have always been close friends, reliable partners and good brothers. Cooperation in ESG is one of the key pillars of our comprehensive strategic partnership,” Tang said.

The event brought together government officials, investors and corporate leaders to explore how ESG practices can advance Zimbabwe’s sustainable development agenda.
