The number of confirmed infections since the outbreak began has surpassed 13m and the death toll is now over 575, 601 fatalities. According to WHO, a million cases have been added in the past week. Worldwide, the number of people dying with Covid-19 is down on the mid-April peak. However the death rate is increasing again, after dipping in June. North America has seen a resurgence of infections in recent weeks, mostly driven by new outbreaks in the US.
The United States now has at least 3,479,483 cases of coronavirus and 138,247related deaths.
Peru surged past 330,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases on Monday. It remains the country with the second highest number of cases in Latin America, behind Brazil. The Peruvian Health Ministry reported 3,797 new cases and 184 new deaths in the past 24 hours. This raises the country’s total to 330,123 cases and 12,054 deaths since the pandemic began.
A total of 614,412 cases have been reported in Africa so far and the death toll stands at 13,504. The number of recoveries is at 305,852 while active cases are at 295,056.
In South Africa, the latest number of confirmed cases is 287 796. According to the latest update, 4 172 deaths have been recorded in the country and there have been 138 241 recoveries. Gauteng province breached 100 000 coronavirus cases. At the beginning of June, Gauteng was recording around 230 Covid-19 positive cases daily, but by the end of the month, it was recording between 3 000 to 4 000 cases daily. As of 12 July, Gauteng recorded 98 431 confirmed cases of Covid-19. The province also recorded 33 514 recoveries and 644 deaths to date.
Malawi recorded 66 new cases to bring the total to 2,430 and 1 new death was recorded to bring the death toll to 39.
Cases in Zimbabwe increased by 49 and the number of infections has passed the 1000 mark, with 1034 cases recorded so far. 1 new death was recorded and the death toll is now at 19. 343 cases have recovered whilst the number of active cases is at 672.
WHO warns of a global Covid-19 ‘resurgence’: ‘Many countries are headed in the wrong direction’
The World Health Organisation warned Monday that there could be no return to normality any time soon as too many countries were bungling their response to the coronavirus pandemic.
After a daily record of 230 000 new cases of Covid-19 were reported to the WHO on Sunday, the UN health agency said the pandemic was only going to get worse unless people stuck to the basics of physical distancing, hand washing and wearing masks. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that countries that were easing their way out of lockdowns were now witnessing a resurgence of the virus because they were not following proven methods to reduce risk.
“I want to be straight with you: there will be no return to the ‘old normal’ for the foreseeable future,” Ghebreyesus told a virtual news briefing. They were: countries that were alert and avoided large outbreaks, those that got a major outbreak under control, those that eased restrictions but are now backsliding, and those that are in an intense transmission phase. Ghebreyesus said the epicentre of the virus remains the Americas.
