The Department of Livestock and Veterinary Services says the Artificial Insemination (AI) programme is targeting at least 1000 cattle for insemination in Zvishavane District’s Livestock Revitalisation Programme.
Speaking to Great Dyke News 24, a veterinary officer for Mberengwa and Zvishavane Dr. Claudius Maguranyanga said the programme which is spearheaded by Mimosa will benefit the whole district.
He also urged farmers within the district to join the programme saying this will help them in increasing their cattle breeds.
The livestock revitalisation programme which is being spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS) in conjunction with Mimosa will help improve communal livestock by providing pedigree strength associated with each cattle type.
The bull breeds that will be used as part of the livestock revitalisation programme are the Boran, Tuli, and Mashona.
According to ZAS, the intended outcomes of the Livestock Revitalisation Programme include increased and improved indigenous breeds nationally, improved regular incomes for participating rural households, improved food, and nutrition security, improved rural livelihoods, improved national socio-economic development and promotion of sustainable agricultural processes.
