Agriculture to lead transformation of rural areas

The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Dr Anxious Masuka has announced the appointment by President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the new Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) board, effective from October 6, 2023, to October 6, 2027.

Comprised of individuals with diverse expertise in agriculture, economics and policy development, the newly appointed AMA board is set to play a crucial role in driving reforms and initiatives aligned with the objectives of Vision 2030.

Dr Masuka acknowledged the critical role of the AMA board in realizing the national development agenda. The minister expressed confidence in the board members’ ability to drive the necessary reforms and transformation within the agricultural sector.

Dr Masuka underscored the key role of agriculture in rural development and the transformation of rural communities as enunciated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

He said through Vision 2030, agriculture assumes a pivotal role in driving economic growth and ensuring food security adding to accomplish this, the national development strategy for agriculture and food systems transformation provides a comprehensive blueprint for modernizing and enhancing the sector.

The AMA board’s primary responsibilities include formulating and implementing policies that promote sustainable agricultural practices, improve market access for farmers, and advance value chain development. Additionally, the board will focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, expanding agribusiness opportunities, and fostering innovation.

As part of their mandate, the board will also undertake initiatives such as reimagining and rebranding the AMA. They will ensure the effective functioning of Village Business Units, School Business Units, Youth Business Units, and 460 irrigation schemes. These initiatives aim to empower communities, particularly in rural areas, and create sustainable and inclusive agricultural practices throughout the country.

One notable appointment to the AMA board is Munyaradzi Hwengwere, the Chairman of YAFM and Buy Zimbabwe, who has been reappointed for a second term.

 The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development emphasized the importance of the agricultural sector in Zimbabwe’s economy, highlighting the need for effective marketing and distribution systems to maximize the sector’s potential.
