A 39-year-old man from Muchena Village, Desmond Dhavengwa, has been arraigned before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court on two counts of contravening the Road Traffic Act.
Dhavengwa faced charges of driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and negligent driving.
The incident occurred on June 20, 2024, at approximately 1500 hours, when Dhavengwa, driving a Nissan Hardbody along Karoi-Nyamambizi Road with two passengers on board, veered into the oncoming traffic lane at a curve. This resulted in a head-on collision with a Mazda B2500, which had three passengers. Two people were injured in the accident.
Police investigations revealed that Dhavengwa did not hold a valid driver’s license. The court found him guilty on both counts and sentenced him to pay a fine of USD 100 for driving without a license, with an alternative of 30 days imprisonment if the fine is not paid. For negligent driving, he was fined USD 200, also with an alternative of 30 days imprisonment in default of payment. Additionally, his driving license is to be endorsed.
