There are 3,308,503 cases of the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide and the total death toll is now at 234, 112. The United Kingdom now has the fourth highest number of cases with 171,253.
The total number of cases in South Africa is now at 5,647 with a 297 jump and the death toll remained unchanged from yesterday.
Zambia and Eswatini both recorded an increase by 9 cases, to bring the total number of cases to 106 and 100 respectively.
Zimbabwean Statistics remain unchanged.
South Africa has now moved into Level 4 of the phased lockdown approach.
Level 4 makes provision for limited economic activity and the easing of some movement. A curfew from 20:00 to 05:00 will kick in, it will be mandatory to wear a cloth face mask, one will be able to buy hot foods for delivery, but not alcohol.
Will remdesivir help Covid-19 patients? Two reports provide different answers
The first gold-standard clinical trial for remdesivir, taking place in China, delivered disappointing results, while the results of a US-designed clinical trial conducted around the world were more promising.
Two new reports have produced conflicting results on the potential effectiveness of remdesivir, an experimental antiviral drug considered to be one of the leading hopes in the fight against Covid-19.
Gilead Sciences announced that the US trial will show that Covid-19 patients treated earlier with remdesivir had better outcomes than those who received the drug later in the course of their illness. The trial also will show that people who take remdesivir for five days do as well as patients who take a 10-day course.
