Zvishavane – Tragedy struck Gudhuza Village in Zvishavane on Saturday night when five members of the same family died after inhaling carbon monoxide from a charcoal brazier (mbaura) they had brought into their bedroom for warmth.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the deaths, which occurred on the night of July 20th, 2025. The deceased have been identified as Jeremiah Simango (42), John Ncube (57), Nigel Ncube, Denzel Simango (15), and Joedire Simango (8). Their bodies were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
District Health Promotion Officer Rumbidzai Chikwanha has since warned members of the public against the use of charcoal stoves in enclosed spaces, saying they emit carbon monoxide — a toxic, odorless gas that can lead to unconsciousness or death if inhaled in large quantities.
“We urge families not to use mbaura indoors when people are asleep. If it must be used, ensure someone stays awake and that the brazier is immediately taken outside after use,” Chikwanha told Great Dyke News.
She emphasized the importance of proper ventilation and public awareness, especially during cold seasons when many turn to charcoal for heat.
Authorities are urging the community to learn from this tragedy and avoid similar incidents by using safe heating methods and ensuring ventilation in sleeping areas.
