The Great Dyke News 24 ,a news and information portal for the Great Dyke has introduced a coronavirus information hub dubbed “CoronaVirus Watch” a platform that provides updates on the COVID-19 outbreak.
This comes after Governments are struggling to keep up with coronavirus disinformation flooding the Internet: bogus cures, false reports and a conspiracy theory that the virus was cooked up in a Chinese lab.
MEJRKH Head of Public Relations and Communications Moses Charedzera said social media has become the stepping stone for wrong information to reach a large number of people in these critical times of the CoronaVirus outbreak.
”We have observed that information is critical in the fight against COVID-19. The combination of a novel, highly contagious and deadly virus which people are at pains to understand and an overbearing social media which has stepped in to fill a yawning information gap has resulted in tendencies towards mass misinformation,” he said.
He also added that individuals have been forwarding unconfirmed data to using these digital platforms hence the need for a platform that provides factual information to the public.
”There are so many half-truths, outright false information, and so-called cures and medicinal interventions circulating on social media but outside approved medical practice.
”We, therefore, saw it fit to open an information hub on a digital link embedded on Great Dyke News 24 and tapping from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, World Health Organisation and other reputable health establishments to ensure accurate and verified information on coronavirus,” said Charedzera.
COVID-19 has so far killed more than 14,652 people worldwide while 334,981 cases have been reported so far.
