Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube has announced that civil servants will get their bonuses in November.

Speaking during the 2020 budget presentation underway, Ncube said the bonuses are based on a formula that is inclusive of transport and housing allowances, which is a variation of the formula that was in use which was based on basic salary only.

“Treasury has made arrangements to pay all civil servants their bonuses in November 2019.

“The bonuses are based on a formula that is inclusive of transport and housing allowances, which is a once-off variation to current policy, which base these payments to basic salary only.

“This was designed to bring relief to public servants in light of the erosion of disposable incomes under the current high inflationary environment,” he said.

He added that government has availed ZWL$70.4 million as seed money for the establishment of the Public Service Pension Fund to facilitate movement from the Pay As You Go to a Defined Contribution Plan.

“Mr Speaker Sir, the 2019 Budget availed ZWL$70.4 million as seed money for the establishment of the Public Service Pension Fund to facilitate movement from the Pay As You Go to a Defined Contribution Plan.

“A further ZWL$289.5 million is proposed in the 2020 Budget towards the initiative.

“Once set up, government will identify assets that will be tied to the scheme as a way of further enhancing its balance sheet,” said Ncube.

In August, Government increased civil servants’ salaries by 76 percent, a development that saw the lowest paid worker earning $1 023 up from $582.

Civil servants were demanding at least $4 750 for the lowest paid worker.

Prices of basic commodities have continued to increase, pushing the prices beyond the reach of many.
