In a chilling case that has shocked the community of Chivi, a 47-year-old man has been arrested for the brutal murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend following a heated argument that turned deadly. Tapiwa Mabhiza of Silver City A, Chivi, is accused of killing Vongai Matonhodze in a violent altercation on February 11, 2025.

According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Masvingo Province, the tragic incident unfolded around 11:00 AM when the couple, traveling in a vehicle driven by Mabhiza, had an argument over an undisclosed issue. The dispute escalated, leading Mabhiza to lose control of the vehicle, which collided with an oncoming truck before veering off the road and getting stuck in mud.

In a desperate attempt to escape the volatile situation, Matonhodze fled the vehicle. However, Mabhiza pursued her, dragged her back, and allegedly attacked her with a spanner, striking her on the back of the head. When she fell, he reportedly picked up a rock and repeatedly struck her head until she died.

After committing the heinous act, Mabhiza fled the scene and was last seen heading towards Nyaningwe Mountain. Matonhodze’s body was taken to Chivi District Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The police launched a manhunt for Mabhiza, and on February 21, 2025, acting on a tip-off, they lured him to Mashava, where he was arrested at the 40km peg along the Masvingo-Zvishavane road.

In their statement, the ZRP commended members of the public for their crucial role in providing information that led to the arrest. They also urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully, emphasizing the importance of seeking assistance from community leaders, clergy, or the police rather than resorting to violence.
