In a series of unsettling incidents that have sent shockwaves through the Midlands province, self-proclaimed prophets and spiritualists are making headlines for their alleged involvement in crimes and unlawful practices. From attempted rape to the illegal possession of dangerous wildlife, these so-called spiritual leaders are leaving a trail of chaos and fear in their wake.

The first case unfolded on a fateful evening near the Amaveni roundabout in Kwekwe, where a supposed prophet, known only as Chikandamina, stands accused of attempting to rape a vulnerable client during a purported spiritual revelation session. The shrine, shrouded in darkness, became the backdrop for a horrifying ordeal that would forever scar the victim.

At approximately 7:00 PM on June 23, 2023, the victim, seeking solace and guidance, sought the services of Chikandamina. Little did she know that this encounter would take a sinister turn. As the discussion delved into spiritual revelations, a growing unease gnawed at the woman’s instincts, prompting her to send an urgent text message to her husband, desperately summoning him to the scene.

Unbeknownst to the victim, Chikandamina allegedly seized this opportune moment to propose an unthinkable solution to her perceived problem. With callous disregard for human dignity, he declared that engaging in a sexual encounter was the only way to achieve spiritual healing. Shockingly, he proceeded to disrobe and forcefully advanced upon the defenceless woman, intent on violating her.

In an extraordinary stroke of fate, the complainant’s husband arrived just in the nick of time, his timely arrival thwarting the prophet’s heinous act. Startled and fearing the consequences of his despicable actions, Chikandamina hastily fled the shrine, clutching his trousers in a desperate bid for escape. Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to bring this alleged perpetrator to justice, but his whereabouts remain unknown, adding to the anxiety of the community.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident that underscores the lawlessness surrounding some self-proclaimed prophets, a duo of Freedom Phiri (30) of Mbizo and Elias Magumise (34) of Torwood in Redcliff has been arrested for the unlawful possession of a python snake. The events unfolded on June 1, 2023, at approximately 6:00 PM, sending shockwaves through the community and highlighting the dangers of unregulated spiritual practices.

Nakai Gono, a 72-year-old resident of Mbizo, invited two spiritualists to her home for prayers, accompanied by her daughter Stella Ziya. Unbeknownst to them, these spiritualists had a hidden agenda. During the visit, they allegedly revealed the presence of an object in the house causing Nakai’s illness, requesting water and salt to perform a ritualistic purification.

While Stella was away fetching the requested items, the spiritualists unveiled their true intentions. From within their satchel emerged a python snake, which they callously concealed behind a wardrobe. Suspicion grew when one of the spiritualists unexpectedly vomited beer during the prayer session, raising the alarm for the complainant.

Prompted by her instincts, the brave woman reported the unsettling incident to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. Responding swiftly to the distress call, law enforcement officers apprehended the suspects and recovered the python snake, subsequently handing it over to the City of Kwekwe Snake Park. The individuals now face charges under the Parks and Wildlife Act, Chapter 14, for their illegal possession of wildlife.

As these shocking cases come to light, the Midlands community finds itself grappling with the disturbing realization that individuals entrusted with spiritual guidance may be using their positions for sinister motives. With prophets on the loose and public safety at stake, authorities and citizens alike are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The search continues for Chikandamina, the alleged prophet involved in the attempted rape case, and the Zimbabwe Republic Police appeals to the public for assistance in locating him. In the face of these disheartening incidents, the community must unite to safeguard the well-being and integrity of its members, ensuring that justice prevails.
