Miners Association Calls On Authorities To Curb Disused Mine Deaths.

Collapsing of disused mines in the Great Dyke have claimed so many lives in the last couple of years and now small scale and artisanal miners (ASM) representatives are calling on authorities in the sector to step in with decisive action to curb the unnecessary loss of life.

Speaking to Great Dyke News reporter Edify Hove, Mberengwa Miners Association Chairperson Anderson Tsikira said authorities should consider channelling funds from taxes collected in the sector to beef up security at defunct mines which have become an active death trap for artisanal miners.

Incidents of disused mines collapsing have become worryingly incessant in the country the latest being the five miners trapped underground at Task Mine in Chegutu where authorities have called off the rescue effort after fifteen days.

In 2019, 24 artisanal miners died after two mines near Battlefields were flooded following a dam collapse.
