Over 250 foreign workers from 20 countries, including African and Asian nations, have been freed from telecom scam centres in Myanmar’s Karen State. The workers were released by the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army and handed over to the Thai army. They are now being assessed for potential human trafficking.
These workers, lured by false job offers, were forced into online criminal activities such as fraud and money laundering. Thailand has increased efforts to shut down scam operations along its border with Myanmar, following growing pressure from both local and international authorities.
