President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on mining companies to prioritize sustainable practices that mitigate the social and environmental impact of their operations, emphasizing the need for responsible resource extraction to secure their social license to operate.
Speaking on the importance of corporate responsibility, the President underscored that mining houses must actively engage with local communities and implement measures that reduce environmental degradation.
“For mining to be sustainable and beneficial to our people, companies must adopt responsible practices that mitigate social and environmental harm. This ensures not only compliance with regulations but also lasting benefits for host communities,” he said.
Zimbabwe’s mining sector is a critical driver of economic growth, contributing significantly to exports and employment. However, concerns over deforestation, pollution, land degradation, and displacement of local populations have raised calls for stronger corporate accountability.
The government has introduced stricter environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) requirements, urging companies to rehabilitate mined land, implement proper waste management systems, and engage in community development projects such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Industry players have responded with commitments to green mining initiatives, including the adoption of cleaner technologies and responsible tailings management. However, environmental watchdogs stress the need for greater transparency and enforcement of regulations to prevent unsustainable practices.
With Zimbabwe targeting a US$12 billion mining industry, the President’s call serves as a reminder that economic gains should not come at the expense of the environment and the well-being of local communities.
