The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed a tragic drowning incident that occurred on the 26th January 2025 at Musavezi River in Makandire Village, under Chief Nhema, Shurugwi.
Speaking to Great Dyke News ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said three juveniles who all reside in the same village were bathing at the river when the youngest, a 7-year-old boy, jumped into the water. His two companions, both girls, managed to retrieve him and warned him against jumping into the river again.
Shortly after, the boy expressed the need to relieve himself and moved a distance of about 6 meters before jumping into the river once more. Unfortunately, he was unable to swim and drowned. Despite efforts to rescue him, he was swept away by the current and could not be located.
The incident was reported to the police, and a Sub-Aqua Unit has been dispatched to assist with the search for the boy.
The police urge the public to exercise caution and avoid bathing or crossing flooded rivers, especially during the rainy season. Several lives have already been lost due to drowning since the onset of the rains.
