Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda has urged the Ministry of Transport to expand toll gate coverage and increase charges for heavy trucks, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road funding.
Speaking in Parliament, Mudenda commended the Minister of Transport for his humility and willingness to consult stakeholders. He then proposed immediate action to ensure strategic weighbridges are installed at key toll points while discussions on the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) continue.
Specifically, Mudenda suggested increasing the number of toll gates on key routes: from three to five on the Hwange road, and two toll gates along the 120-kilometer Cross-Dete to Binga route, to optimize revenue collection. He also recommended higher toll fees for large trucks to support road maintenance and infrastructure development.
Mudenda emphasized a “mathematical” approach to toll placement, ensuring that funds are raised efficiently for Zimbabwe’s transport network.
