Police authorities have arrested 40 people associated with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party who were actively engaged in pre-election campaign activities. The incident unfolded in the Glenview suburb of the capital city, Harare, on Tuesday. Among those taken into custody was Gladmore Hakata, the CCC’s candidate for the Glenview South parliamentary seat.
Fadzayi Mahere, the spokesperson for Citizens Coalition for Change, confirmed the arrests and expressed concern over the situation. The CCC members were apprehended due to their involvement in activities that were not outlined in the official notification provided for a rally in the Glenview suburb.
According to a statement disseminated on social media by the police, the CCC’s actions included a vehicular procession, disruption of traffic flow, and the vocalization of party slogans along the streets. These actions led to police intervention following a report filed by a concerned resident.
As the election date of August 23rd draws near, the political landscape remains charged with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and CCC leader Nelson Chamisa emerging as the prominent contenders.
