In response to the growing number of accidents involving cattle on the roads, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is urging livestock owners to take better care in managing their animals, particularly along the Gweru-Bulawayo Road. The straying of livestock onto highways has become a significant risk factor, contributing to an increase in road traffic accidents.

ZRP Midlands spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, has called on farmers to ensure their fences are properly maintained and their gates are kept closed at all times.

“We urge livestock owners to be proactive in preventing their animals from wandering onto the roads. Damaged fences and gates left open contribute to the dangerous situation,” Mahoko said.

Farmers are also encouraged to use designated cattle crossings when moving their livestock, with drovers wearing reflective clothing to ensure visibility. This not only ensures the safety of the animals but also of drivers, reducing the risk of accidents.
