The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has issued a stern warning to residents and business owners against illegal electricity connections, following a surge in electricity-related accidents in the Midlands Province.
Speaking recently, ZERA’s Regional Electricity Inspector ,Wellington Nyamakawu, emphasized the dangers of unauthorized electrical work and urged the public to adhere to legal standards to prevent loss of life and avoid severe legal consequences.
In 2024, the Midlands Province recorded a troubling 25 electricity-related accidents, including four fatalities. Shockingly, 75% of the victims did not have legal electricity connections at home.
Additionally, 12 accidents resulted in injuries, and nine incidents involved livestock. The situation has not improved in 2025, with six accidents already reported in January alone.
