A man is feared dead after being attacked by a crocodile while crossing Mbembeswani River in Mbizo, Kwekwe, on 26 January 2026.

Midlands Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the incident occurred at around 6:00pm. The victim was identified as Tichaona Muguti, whose age and other personal details are not yet known. Muguti was employed by Kingten Mine in Kwekwe.

Inspector Mahoko said Muguti was in the company of another man, Trust Ngwenya (24), of Makaure Business Centre. The two were crossing the river when a crocodile suddenly emerged and attacked Muguti, who was walking in front. The reptile reportedly dragged him into the water and submerged him.

Other people in the area were alerted but were unable to assist due to the suddenness and danger of the attack. Muguti was not seen again, and authorities suspect he may have been killed by the crocodile.

Search and rescue operations were immediately launched by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police Sub-Aqua Unit. However, as of the latest update, the search has not yielded any positive results.

Police have urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution when crossing rivers, particularly in areas known to be inhabited by dangerous wildlife, as investigations and search efforts continue.
