Zimbabwean Paralympic icon Elliot Mujaji has embarked on a gruelling long-distance walk from Bulawayo to Harare, covering approximately 446 kilometres, in a bold initiative aimed at raising funds and awareness for youth development.

The walk is part of a national fundraising campaign to establish a youth sports academy, with a focus on nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for children, including those living with disabilities.

Mujaji, a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, is no stranger to overcoming adversity. After losing his right arm in a workplace accident, he went on to win Zimbabwe’s first Paralympic gold medals in the 100m sprint in 2000 and 2004, becoming a symbol of resilience and determination.

Speaking during the campaign, Mujaji appealed for public support, emphasising the broader vision behind the initiative.

“I need your support to make this a reality… to give every child the chance to shine,” he said, calling on individuals and organisations to donate, partner, or help spread the message.

The journey, expected to take around two weeks, is being undertaken alongside a small support team as they pass through towns and rural communities, mobilising support for what is envisioned as a Centre of Excellence for young athletes.

The project targets hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding as part of a long-term plan to develop a fully-fledged sports complex that will provide training facilities, mentorship, and pathways to professional sport for underprivileged youth.

“This is about creating a legacy of opportunity and hope,” Mujaji said. “Every step takes us closer to a brighter future.”

The initiative has already begun attracting attention from local authorities, corporates, and communities, with calls for Zimbabweans to rally behind the campaign and help transform the lives of the next generation through sport.
