New US$64,000 Administration Block Opens at George Chipadza Secondary School as Zimbabwe Expands Education Infrastructure

A newly commissioned US$64,000 administration block at George Chipadza Secondary School has become the latest symbol of Zimbabwe’s effort to modernise public education infrastructure, as Government seeks to improve learning environments while expanding access to quality secondary education under Vision 2030.

The facility, officially commissioned in Zvishavane by Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube, is expected to strengthen the school’s administrative capacity and improve service delivery for hundreds of learners drawn from one of the province’s fastest-growing communities.

Beyond the bricks and mortar, officials say the project reflects a broader national strategy to upgrade educational infrastructure as part of the Second Republic’s drive to build a skilled workforce capable of supporting economic transformation under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).

Addressing parents, teachers, learners and community leaders during the commissioning ceremony, Ncube described the project as evidence that sustained collaboration between Government and local communities remains central to the country’s development agenda.

He praised the School Development Committee (SDC), parents and local residents for mobilising resources to complete the administration block, saying the achievement demonstrated the practical application of the national development philosophy, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”—a country is built by its own people.

The minister said Government remains committed to improving access to quality education through continued investment in both physical and digital infrastructure.

Among the priority interventions, he highlighted the construction of modern model schools, the expansion of digital learning platforms, and the rollout of technology aimed at narrowing the digital divide between urban and rural communities.

These initiatives include the installation of Starlink satellite internet connectivity at schools, the distribution of laptops to learners and teachers, and the deployment of additional telecommunications base stations to improve internet access in underserved areas.

Education officials argue that digital connectivity is increasingly becoming as important as classroom infrastructure, particularly as schools integrate online learning resources, digital research tools and technology-based teaching methods into the curriculum.

Ncube also used the occasion to advocate for the elevation of George Chipadza Secondary School to A-Level status, arguing that the continued population growth in Zvishavane has created increasing demand for advanced secondary education.

He said upgrading the institution would reduce the need for learners to travel long distances in search of A-Level places while easing pressure on neighbouring schools already operating at capacity.

The proposal aligns with broader efforts by Government to increase access to post-Ordinary Level education as Zimbabwe seeks to produce more graduates equipped for tertiary education, technical training and an increasingly knowledge-driven economy.

The minister challenged parents to continue paying school fees on time, describing community financial support as an essential pillar in maintaining school infrastructure, purchasing learning materials and sustaining future development projects.

He also appealed to learners to remain focused on their education, warning against social challenges that continue to undermine academic achievement among young people.

Ncube urged students to reject drug and substance abuse, cybercrime, bullying and child marriages, saying these social ills threaten both individual futures and national development by depriving communities of productive citizens.

Education experts have increasingly identified substance abuse and cyber-related offences as emerging risks affecting learners across Zimbabwe, prompting schools to intensify awareness campaigns alongside traditional academic programmes.

The commissioning ceremony also carried a broader social welfare dimension, with Ncube pledging donations to George Chipadza Secondary School as well as children’s homes and elderly care institutions in Zvishavane.

The donations, officials said, form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen support for vulnerable members of the community while encouraging greater collaboration between Government, schools and local stakeholders.

As Zimbabwe continues investing in education infrastructure, projects such as the George Chipadza administration block illustrate a strategy that extends beyond constructing classrooms. Increasingly, the focus is on creating institutions capable of delivering modern education supported by improved administration, digital connectivity and community participation.

For communities like Zvishavane, where demand for education continues to rise alongside population growth and economic activity, such investments are expected to play an important role in preparing young people with the skills needed to participate in Zimbabwe’s long-term development agenda under Vision 2030.
