The total number of deaths is now 1,605,235, with Italy still having the highest number of deaths at 18, 279 followed by America which has 15, 447.
New York State now has more coronavirus cases than any other country outside the US, according to latest figures.
The state’s confirmed caseload of Covid-19 jumped by 10,000 on Thursday to 159,937, placing it ahead of Spain (153,222 cases) and Italy (143,626).
The number of new cases in South Africa increased by 89 as they now have a total of 1 934 confirmed cases. So far, 68 874 tests have been conducted.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday night the extension of the lockdown by two weeks. He said the lockdown has been shown to be effective, saying that before the lockdown the daily infection rate increased by about 42% – it was now at just 4%.
Ramaphosa, his deputy, David Mabuza, and his entire cabinet will take a 33% pay cut for the next three months and that money will be donated to relief efforts for Covid-19.
Zimbabwean, Eswatini, Zambian and Mozambican statistics remained unchanged from the previous day.
Positive cases in Botswana rose from 6 to 13 and the health director placed President Mokgweetsi Masisi and all members of parliament, under quarantine after a nurse at a special session the previous day tested positive for COVID-19.
