In a significant move to enforce responsible and lawful mining practices, the Zimbabwean government, has suspended licenses for operators found to be flouting mining laws. The Responsible Mining Audit, initiated on May 11, 2023, aims to ensure that mining activities adhere to legal standards and contribute to sustainable development.
During a recent Post Cabinet Press Briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, disclosed that the audit revealed non-compliance issues, particularly among small-scale mines with up to 200 employees. Violations included discrepancies in transportation and licensing regulations.
Dr. Muswere emphasized the corrective measures being taken, including the imposition of fines, confiscation of explosives, suspension of operating licenses, and cautions with instructions to rectify issues within specified time frames. The Responsible Mining Audit has generated valuable recommendations, and the government is actively implementing them.
While acknowledging commendable compliance among large-scale mines with at least 1,000 employees in eight provinces, Dr. Muswere noted isolated cases of immigration law violations.
