The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has apprehended Antony Singende, an inspector from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development in Mashonaland East Province, on charges of extortion.
As per ZACC’s documentation, Singende visited Koodoo Mine in Marondera on the 15th of this month and allegedly demanded a bribe from the mine’s general manager, Virimayi Nyamvura.
Singende purportedly sought payment to refrain from revoking the company’s mining license. Additionally, he allegedly requested an additional US$200 to avoid withdrawing the company’s blasting license, setting a deadline for Nyamvura to bring the money to his office on the 17th.
Nyamvura, displeased with the demands, reported the incident to ZACC officials, who orchestrated a sting operation resulting in Singende’s arrest.
