Former senior military officer Claude “Coplan” Pivi, Guinea’s most wanted fugitive, has been extradited from Liberia to serve his life sentence for his role in the 2009 stadium massacre in Conakry.
Pivi, who escaped prison in November 2023, was captured along with his son, Verny Pivi, during a routine border check. Verny is accused of orchestrating his father’s escape.
Pivi had been convicted in absentia for the massacre that left over 156 opposition supporters dead and scores of women raped. Authorities had placed a $58,000 bounty on his head.
Military prosecutor Col. Aly Camara confirmed Pivi’s return to Conakry’s central prison. Survivors of the massacre, like Fatoumata Diariou Camara, expressed relief at his recapture.
Ex-military leader Moussa Dadis Camara, also implicated in the massacre, remains in prison on a 20-year sentence.
